Right to obtain information from other data file controllers

For the purposes of carrying out their duties and keeping personal data files the police have the right, with the aid of a technical interface, to obtain information from other data file controllers, for example from the data systems of judicial administration, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Finnish Defence Forces, the Frontier Guard, the Population Register Centre, the Finnish Vehicle Administration and the Directorate of Immigration, as agreed with the controller concerned.

The right of the police to obtain information for the purposes of carrying out their duties requires that the right to obtain information is laid down in legislation regulating both parties. The right of the police to obtain information for the purposes of performing a particular duty may also be laid down in other legislation.

Under certain circumstances those interested may check the information held on them in the data systems of different data file controllers. The relevant request should be made directly to the authority acting as the controller of the file in question.
