Scientific researchA new fixed-term residence permit (extended permit) for scientific research is issued by the police of the foreign national's place of residence. The permit is applied for in writing using the dedicated form. The first permit is issued by the Finnish Immigration Service. The police issues a new fixed-term residence permit if the criteria on which the previous fixed-term residence permit was granted to a foreign national remain valid. You can also apply for a residence permit via the online service. The invitation must include the following details: who extends the invitation to whom, to do what, for what time period, how the stay is financed (grant, salary, paid from where), monthly amount, university form (paper copy). In lieu of the invitation, a certificate of employment or a document containing information on the employment relationship are also acceptable, as long as the above-listed information can be found in the document. A researcher must prove that he or she has secure means of support either through a grant, stipend or other funds. The applicant must have a minimum of €900 a month at his or her disposal. A postgraduate student will be considered a researcher if he or she receives a) a grant or b) a salary in return for his or her work. For citizens of EU member states and similar, a residence permit is not required. If an EU citizen resides in Finland for more than three months, he or she must register his or her stay with the police department of his or her place of residence within three months of entering the country.
