Property found in a public place, and lost property of low value

Lost property found on public transport, at a railway or bus station or other equivalent location must be handed to the staff at the location or taken to the lost property office, if there is one. The same applies to lost property found at business premises, government offices, other office premises, workplaces, educational establishments, hospitals, theatres, sports halls or similar.

If the owner does not claim the property within two weeks, it will be forwarded to the police. If the owner does not claim the property from the police within three months, it will be transferred to the State or to the owner of the lost property office.

Anyone who finds lost property of low value not in the places listed above must inform the owner, if known. The finder may keep an item of lost property of low value if it is unreasonably difficult to trace the owner. An item of lost property is considered to be of low value if it is worth 20 euros or less and has apparently no special value regarding its use and no apparent sentimental or other value to its owner.
