Duplicate of driving licence

The police will grant a duplicate of a driving licence if the licence has been lost, damaged, destroyed or stolen, or if it is no longer easy to identify the holder by the photo. If the driving licence is later found, it must be surrendered to the police. If the licence holder's name or personal identity number has changed, the application must be submitted within three months of the change.

An application for a duplicate of a driving licence must be submitted in writing to the local police and paid for at the same time. A duplicate will not be issued if the holder of the right to drive has a permanent residence in another EU or EEA country. In that case the duplicate is issued by the country of residence.

It is possible to make an appointment for police licence services by using the time reservation system.

When applying for a duplicate of a driving licence, the following must be submitted:

  • 2 photographs (not required if the previous photographs were submitted after 1.1.2010)
  • written account stating that the driving licence has been stolen, lost or destroyed, as appropriate
  • previous driving licence, if the applicant still has it.

While waiting to get the duplicate licence, the applicant may be issued with an interim driving licence (for an additional fee), valid for up to three months.
